Texas Adventure – San Antonio and The Salt Lick BBQ

It’s been a couple of weeks since my trip down to visit my brother in Texas.  I’m splitting them into two posts since we did San Antonio one day and Fort Hood and Austin the other.  As per the title, we’ll be exploring a San Antonio in this one, along with Salt Lick BBQ.  I had never been to Texas before and knew it would be hot, but I think that was an understatement.  I landed in Austin and as soon as I got off the plane (mind you, at 11pm), I experienced this huge whiff of hot air.  It reached a high of 108 degrees the whole weekend and only went down to about 95-98 degrees at night.  We stayed in Killeen, right down the road from where my brother lives, which is also near the fort.  Not much going on around that area except for a lot of fast food.  Having lived in the northeast all my life, it was definitely amazing to see how expansive this state is.  Things are so spread out.  It took us about 2.5 hours to get to San Antonio.  Never in my life did I ever think I would make it down to the Lone Star state.  Us being history buffs (and trying not to have such a long road trip), we decided to go check out the Alamo.  We got there early enough so that we didn’t have to wait outside too long in the heat. We parked a little bit away from the site, so the first few photos are of buildings we walked by.

The history of the Alamo is really interesting. The building was actually very far back into the “fort” area. It had an outer wall that was way in front of it. Now across the way is the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum. Kind of crazy when you think about it. Everyone fighting at the Alamo died, including the famous Davy Crockett. Only a few women and children were the sole survivors of the battle because they were inside the Alamo in a room that was blocked off. We weren’t allowed to take photos inside, but I can tell you from being an eye-witness…there is no basement! (I think I’ve overkilled this one).

With not too much on the inside, we went out the back and walked around the grounds.

We couldn’t walk around too much since it was so hot out. After a long day in the heat, some authentic Texas BBQ was in order. My brother decided to put his trust into a Man vs. Food episode where he went to the Salt Lick. Now, as you’ll remember, Dr. Awesome and I put our faith into Mr. Richman before for some North Carolina BBQ and we ended up very disappointed. Well, this one was spot on. I had never seen a real pit BBQ before and boy, it was a sight to behold. Dr. Awesome was very jealous.

We ended up getting the 3 meat combo of sausage, brisket and pork ribs, which came with a side of coleslaw, potato salad and beans.

Now, being a pro at watching cooking shows and having watched enough BBQ programs, I knew to ask for something that wasn’t on the menu: burnt ends. This is the part of the brisket where all the flavor goes to. The waitress gave me a smile when I asked if they sold them and she brought us out this place of awesomeness:

My brother and I gave each other a nod once the order was put in. My parents didn’t even know about this cut of meat and lets just say, they won’t forget about asking for it the next time they get BBQ. You are welcome.

The meal also came with some great white bread and pickles with onions.

Dessert was a mix of a blackberry and peach cobbler. We had to try both. Could you have said no?

There was just one guy chopping up ribs the whole night. Next time, we’re getting the unlimited platter of meat to get our hands on more of those ribs.  This place totally satiated my BBQ appetite…finally!

Well, that was our day in San Antonio.  I wish we were able to go around more, but the heat really made it impossible. We had some good family time and got to experience one of the great historic places in the U.S.  Can’t complain too much 🙂

Trailer Park Lounge

It’s a been a little while since ZsaZsa and mine’s visit to the Trailer Park Lounge.  She was good and wrote about our experience right after it happened (unlike me).  You can read her post and see all the photos she took here.  It was a cute place. Would I ever go back? Probably not.  I had a grilled chicken sandwich and it came with tater tots!  That was cool.  Poor ZsaZsa got the amped up tater tots with chili and cheese.  I suggested that the next place we eat, we need to have some sort of veg.  She’s going to be frolicking around Africa for a bit, so our eating adventures will be put on hold.  They did serve champagne in a can, which we both had to partake in.  The service was pretty good, but I think my days of going to this type of place might be over.  Definitely more of a tourist attraction and after work drink spot.  I’m glad we tried it out, though.

As I’m typing this, my Texas photos are being uploaded.  You can cheat and look at them before I write my posts (check out the Yummy Photos on the right hand side of the page).  Tomorrow, I’m taking a pickling class with my friend Jill at The Brooklyn Kitchen in Williamsburg.  I’m really excited to finally learn how to do this.  We’re being taught by the person who created McClure’s Pickles.  Like I said on Twitter, don’t be surprised if you start getting pickle presents!

Heading to Texas

This weekend, I’m heading to Austin, Texas to see my brother before he ships off to Afghanistan later this month.  I’ve never been to Texas before and have been dying to go to Austin, so this will be a great time!  Many pictures about the town and yums to be had, so be prepared for a nice post about this trip.

Our First (And Successful) Attempt at Ribs

Yes, I know what you all are thinking: Dr. Awesome and I are geniuses. We had all these great ribs to cook from our Flying Pigs Farm CSA, but because we’re in an apartment in NYC, there’s no way to really grill them (unless it’s on a grill pan and that would take forever).  So, we searched for some recipes and found this one.  And as you can see, it turned out great!  The meat just fell off of the bone, the sauce reduced down and was delicious.

The two salads we made were a baby fennel and cucumber summer salad, thanks to a recipe from Basis Foods, and just a random corn salad we came up with (with cherry tomatoes and cilantro) since we had corn (along with the fennel and cucumbers) from our CSA.  It’s great feeling to know where all this food came from and that we’re actually using it and not wasting.  Summer can be a very inspiring time to cook.  Fresh, bold flavors with a nice cocktail can definitely make a summer night enjoyable (especially with this heat wave we’re having).

I need to go through my seed collection from Sprout Robot to see what I can start planting now and harvest in the fall.  I’ve been a bit lazy with my patio garden and I’m getting the itch to try again.  Dr. Awesome likes to call it my  “Charlie Brown Garden”.  I did grow one awesome string bean!….And a weird looking cucumber.  I just think I need to strategize since we don’t get many hours of sun on the balcony.  Any ideas are welcome!

My First Supper Club – Apt 4 Food and Wine

First, I must remark that Palladia is the best channel ever. As I write this post, they’re playing an Oasis concert from 2008. It’s great background music to get into the zen mode of writing about mine and Dr. Awesome’s first supper club experience. It all started (and I think I am repeating myself here) when I was watching the Cooking Channel and this pilot show called The Four Coursemen came on. They went to local places and sourced some great ingredients and held dinner for a bunch of people along with a wine pairing. They do this every so often and basically sell out each time. And that was it. I was on the hunt for something similar. Somehow (and it was probably on twitter…thanks social media!) I found out about this group called Apt. 4 Food and Wine. I signed up a couple of months ago and received an email about 3 weeks ago that they were going to do some summer dinners. I jumped. For $85 you get a 4-5 course meal (ours was 5 courses, even though it was advertised as 4) along with wine pairing. Definitely worth it. Dr. Awesome was a little skeptical because of the idea of going to some random peoples apartment and eating with strangers (he later ate his words). We trekked to South Williamsburg in the rain to meet our destiny. We ended up being the first people to arrive. Our hosts greeted us and gave us a glass of wine while they were still preparing our dinner. The guys were very nice and made us feel right at home. Plus, the apartment we were in was amazing, as you’ll see from the photo of the view they have of the east river.

There were supposed to be 8 of us eating, but only 5 of us showed up (the weather being a big factor). I think it was great that there were less of us. We really got to know each other well and had a great time. The 4 out of the 5 of us had never done something like this before, so it was nice experiencing this with other newbs.

Our first dish was a “salad” of market vegetables with mint and a shallot vinaigrette and was served with a Jean Bourdy Crémant du Jura (from France).  There was a little squash puree too.

The next course was a tune tartare with strawberry gazpacho and was served with a 2010 Domaine de Sulauze Rosé “Pomponette” from Provence, France.

This was really cool. You wouldn’t think that strawberries and tuna go together. Well, in this, it definitely worked. And our host that did the wine pairings really knew his stuff. The rosé went incredibly well with the dish.

Third course: a deconstructed BLT – grilled romaine, tomato mayo and bacon (with bits of bread crumbs). Now, we were served the most amazing chardonnay. It was a 2006 Yering Station Reserve from Yarra Valley, Australia. You can’t get it here at all, so I think a trip to Aussie to get this wine will be in order. It tasted so much like the wood from the barrel. It was really amazing.

The main course: fettuccine with coffee-cured duck breast and a slow poached egg (in the shell!) served with a 2009 Cru Wine Company Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highland, California.

When Dr. Awesome heard the words “duck” and “poached egg” he was smitten (and also “bacon” from the course before). During this dish, I asked Jay, the chef, if he had ever gone to culinary school, because everything was just so sensational. He said that he went for two years. Apt 4 started out as a wine club, but then expanded into doing dinners. They’ve been around for about a year and a half and are growing to the point where dinners now consist of people other than friends. Really interesting stuff!

Jay then presented us with a homemade peanut butter chip ice cream and banana fritters with a 2009 Robert Mondavi Moscato D’Oro from Napa Valley, California. Jay said he was afraid the ice cream wasn’t going to freeze in time, but all was well! (and extremely delicious!) I know what you’re thinking….Robert Mondavi…but don’t judge! This is from their wine club/reserve list and was a quality dessert wine.

Dr. Awesome and I left so so happy. It was a really great experience and we can’t wait to do it again. These guys (and lady, but she wasn’t around) really know what they’re doing and try to create a really friendly and warm environment while introducing you to wines and great food that was locally sourced. It’s also a great way to meet new people too. I highly recommend it and if you’re interested, definitely give Apt 4 a swirl.  We’re going back…maybe you should come with us! 🙂
